La Palabra del Campeón

“My English is not perfect — pero my heart? My heart is perfect.”

The Champ is here. El Campeón — the station’s Spanish-language host — teaches English speakers the Spanish of daily survival, palabra por palabra, one practical scene per episode, in his own warm Spanglish voice. And for the Spanish-speaking elders who raised this borough: your language is treated here as what it is — a bridge, not a barrier. Five words at a time, at an elder’s pace, with the Founder’s Why spoken in every episode.

The Course

Five episodes, five scenes of Bronx life

The full first course is produced and seated in the station’s daytime rotation. Each episode teaches five words for one scene — say them out loud; la práctica makes the campeón.

Episode 1

At the Pharmacy — En la farmacia

Receta (prescription) · Cita (appointment) · Seguro (insurance) · Farmacia (pharmacy) · Repuesto (refill)

“Necesito mi receta, por favor.” — I need my prescription, please.

Episode 2

At the Doctor — En el consultorio

Dolor (pain) · Fiebre (fever) · Medicina (medicine) · Me duele (it hurts me) · Ayuda (help)

“Me duele la cabeza.” — My head hurts.

Episode 3

The Landlord — El casero

Renta (rent) · Apartamento (apartment) · Calefacción (heat) · Roto (broken) · Llave (key)

“No hay calefacción.” — There is no heat.

Episode 4

At the Bus — En el autobús

Parada (bus stop) · Boleto (ticket) · ¿Cuánto cuesta? (how much does it cost?) · Tarjeta (card) · Me bajo aquí (I get off here)

“¿Dónde está la parada?” — Where is the bus stop?

Episode 5

Repaso — The Review

No new words — the Champ proves what we learned. All five scenes again, out loud, until the words are yours.

“Say them LOUD with me.”

How To Listen

Spoken In Every Episode

The Founder’s Why

Hear why this segment exists. When our founder was first planted here in the Bronx, he could not speak Spanish — and doors closed on him that should have opened. Some closed them to be cruel, using language as a weapon — when our differences should have been celebrated, they were weaponized instead.

Y él lo dice claro: no se lo deseo a nadie. Ni al que habla inglés, ni al extranjero recién llegado. Nadie debe quedarse sin apoyo por culpa de un idioma.

So now the Champ opens the door from the other side — teaching español, palabra por palabra — so nobody in this borough stands outside, the way he once did. We are one big family — different costumes, same heart. So we raise the bar, and we level the playing field.
